FAQ - 💬
❓ What is the difference between Hippeastrum and amaryllis?
👉 The plant we commonly call “amaryllis” is a South American native in the genus Hippeastrum, while the true amaryllis or belladonna lilies (Amaryllis spp.) are from South Africa. Both, however, are in the amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae).
❓ How do you care for an amaryllis Hippeastrum plant?
👉 Amaryllis like a constant temperature of around 20 degrees C. Keep the pot in a warm room, in full light or outside in a sheltered area. Flowering usually will begin six to seven weeks after planting. Once the bulb is flowering remove the pot from direct sun to extend the life of the flower.
❓ Do you cut back Hippeastrum after flowering?
👉 Remove spent flowers Individual Hippeastrum stems do not reflower, so after a bloom has faded, you can cut the stem close to the top of the bulb. This keeps plants looking tidy while minimising the risk of fungal infections. Cut the leaves off only when they've completely died off.
❓ How long do Hippeastrum bulbs last?
👉 The average lifespan of a bulb is about 25 years, though it's not unheard of for an heirloom amaryllis to be passed down through families for 50 years or more.
❓ What do you do with Hippeastrum after flowering?
👉 After flowering is finished (usually within 2-3 weeks), cut flower stems close to the bulb. You can then take the bulb out of the pot (with its leaves) and plant into the garden or a larger pot as preferred (put some well-decayed cow manure into the soil first). The bulb can be lifted again in April-May.
❓ Do Hippeastrums multiply?
👉 Hippeastrums can be propagated by division the small plantlets or offsets growing from the mother plant called pups. After dividing the pups they can be transplanted into another pot around May or June and then you would expect these pups to flower within three years.
❓ Do Hippeastrums flower every year?
👉 Hippeastrum are popular gifts at Christmas. They are often commonly known as amaryllis and, by following a few easy tips, these beautiful flowers will bloom year after year for you.
❓ How do you get Hippeastrum to flower again?
👉 Stop feeding your plant, but continue watering once every two weeks to keep the soil just moist. After eight to ten weeks, return your hippeastrum to room temperature and cut off all the foliage to 6cm above the bulb. Resume watering and start feeding once the new growth appears.
❓ What do I do when my amaryllis has finished flowering?
👉 After the flowers fade, cut off the flower stalk with a sharp knife. Make the cut 1 to 2 inches above the bulb. Don't damage the foliage. In order for the bulb to bloom again next season, the plant must replenish its depleted food reserves.
❓ Why do my Hippeastrums not flower?
👉 When an amaryllis has only leaves and no blooms, it is often a sign that the bulb didn't receive the right care and growing conditions after its first flowering. Amaryllis (Hippeastrum spp.
❓ Can you leave bulbs in pots?
👉 You may keep the bulbs in pots after flowering, but it is a good idea to introduce some new soil with all its nutrients and fertilize again. You may also remove the bulbs, let them air dry, and put them in a paper bag in a location with the proper chilling requirements until you are ready to force them again.
👉 Both, however, are in the amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae). The genus Hippeastrum is native primarily in tropical and subtropical regions in two main areas of Eastern Brazil and the central southern Andes (Peru, Bolivia and Argentina), but some species occur as far north as Mexico and the West Indies.
👉 They are often commonly known as amaryllis and, by following a few easy tips, these beautiful flowers will bloom year after year for you. Hippeastrum is a tender bulb and needs to be planted in a pot indoors. Bulbs should flower about six to eight weeks after planting, and should be planted from October to January.
👉 Once your amaryllis flowers are gone for the season, it is time to learn how to care for an amaryllis in its replenishing stage. The bulb is depleted of minerals after flowering, but the stalks remain. By cutting the tops of the stalks down while leaving the leaves, you can allow the amaryllis to begin its re-flowering process.
